Intersex healthcare and visibility throughout Europe

Moderator: Dr Nikoletta Pikramenou Member of the Coordination Team, Intersex Greece

Biography:

Dr Nikoletta Pikramenou is a legal expert on intersex rights. In 2019, she published the book  ‘Intersex rights. Living between sexes’ and it introduced the first legal global comparative study on intersex. The same year, she joined Intersex Greece and in 2022, she worked closely with the Greek Ministry of Health for the preparation of the bill on the IGM ban. In July 2022, Greece became the 5th country in the world to ban IGM. In 2023, she joined the Faculty of Sociology (Sociolegal Studies) of the University of Warsaw and she started collaborating with the Council of Europe for the drafting of the upcoming recommendations on intersex rights.

 

Jana Hugo Policy Officer at OII Europe

Biography:

Jana Hugo (she/her) is a Policy Officer at OII Europe. Her work focuses on policy and advocacy in relation to securing and protecting intersex persons’ human rights at the EU and Council of Europe. Jana is an intersex ally from South Africa, and has a Masters in Gender studies. She currently lives in Berlin, Germany.

 

Irene Kuzemko Capacity & Community Building Officer at OII Europe

Biography:

Irene Kuzemko is the Capacity & Community Building Officer of OII Europe. Her work focuses on community building and organizing, on creating training and educational measures for the intersex movement and on supporting OII Europe’s member organisations. She’s an intersex person and activist from Ukraine and Russia, active in the intersex movement since 2015.

 

Luan Pertl Consultant, Intersex Refugee & Asylum Program at OII Europe

Biography:
Luan Pertl is a queer activist with more than 20 years of experience and focuses on intersex activism during the last 10 years. Luan is part of the Austrian intersex organization VIMÖ/OII Austria and a self employed systemic organizational developmental counselor and trainer on intersex issues and gender diversity in Germany.

 

Kristian Ranđelović Founder & Director at XY Spectrum

Biography:

Kristian Ranđelović  is an activist for LGBTI+ rights in the Balkan region, focusing on the rights of transgender and intersex people. Ranđelović has developed the first transgender support group in the Balkans. He is one of the co-founders of the Belgrade-based organization XY Spectrum, which tackles issues of intersex, trans and non-binary persons.

 

Rinio Symeonidou Co-Founder & Member of the Coordination Group of Intersex Greece

Irene (Rinio) Symeonidou (she/her) is a human rights advocate, activist and educator from Greece who got involved with intersex activism after giving birth to an intersex child against medical pressure to abort. Founding member of  “Intersex Greece“, and member of “Rainbow School” , she raised the issue of Intersex Human Rights violations at the Greek Parliament (2017) and advocated for the Legal Ban of  IGM in Greece (2022). She’s active in peer-support and institutional training on the rights/inclusion of intersex people in parenting, education, health, labour and citizenship, while holding a B.A. in Studies in European Culture and doing her masters on Gender Studies.
